Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is a grand international airport in Hyderabad. It serves the public of the city and also has more than 15 international airlines halting at the airport. It's situated in Shamshabad, about 24 km (15 miles) to the south of the city. It started operating on March 23, 2008, replacing Begumpet Airport, which used to be the only airport for regular people in Hyderabad. It's called Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, after the former Prime Minister of India. It's spread over 5,500 acres (2,200 hectares) and is the largest in India in terms of size.
The airport is run by run by GMR & GHIAL; it is a private-public consortium. It was the first airport in India to start using e-boarding passes for domestic and international flights in Dec 2015 & Oct 2020. It's also been ranked among the top 10 airports worldwide by AirHelp. As the 4th busiest airport in India, it manages almost 21 million passengers. It has also managed over 140,000 tonnes (150,000 short tons) of cargo between April 2022 and March 2023.
The airport was built to reduce the public from Begumpet Airport. It has a main terminal for passengers, a cargo terminal, and 2 runways. Besides, there are places for training pilots, fuel storage, and a solar power plant. Also, it has two areas for fixing and maintaining aeroplanes. The airport is used by Alliance Air (India), Amazon Air, Blue Dart Aviation, SpiceJet, and IndiGo. It's also an important airport for Air India.
Connectivity from the airport
The RGIA is connected to Hyderabad city by NH 44, NH 765, and the ORR. The PV Narasimha Rao Expressway flyover meets NH 44. This flyover, stretching 13 km, has reduced travel time to 30–40 min. It has 3 entry and exit points.
The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation operates the "Pushpak – Airport Liner" service. It provides bus transportation to various parts of the city. This service started in December 2012, replacing GMR's Aero Express service. As part of the 2nd phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project, a 31 km (19-mile) rail connection between Raidurg and RGIA will be built. The nearest Indian Railways station to the airport is Umdanagar, which is located 6 km away.
Investment potential of real estate near the airport
There are many posh localities near the airport and nearby. Places like Kokapet and Hi-tech City are in high demand. People search for places that easily connect with the airport and reduce travelling time. Kokapet is only 30 Km away from the airport and is connected through ORR. The reality, developers and IT workers are looking to invest in this area. A new project that is Brigade Neopolis is launched by Brigade Group. It is a residential apartment project which is close to the airport.
